“Once I was beautiful”
A sentence in pale blue lies close to the camera, with a sunlit park beyond it. Photography by Lu Heng.

The words “Once I was beautiful” occupy the rough surface nearest the camera. Beyond them, a broad tree holds the left side of the picture, and an empty swing hangs on the right.
The sentence speaks in the past tense. The leaves, grass and houses behind it remain brightly visible. Reading the words and then looking past them changes where the attention rests.
