Otherwise, it will keep fragmenting and creating walls within itself, like in the case of Cuba, and many Middle Eastern countries.
If internet governance is done properly, the internet can remain a great motor for the future of humankind and its economic and social growth. It possesses the power to affect the thinking and attitudes of billions of people daily and has brought us closer to a global marketplace with valuable information. So, when governing and regulating the internet, one must strive to keep it free, neutral, and accessible.
Of course, countries strive to freely provide their data, but they need to protect their privacy at the same time. A good example of such an issue is the debate in ICANN on the Registry Directory Services (RDS), where private associates and citizens of NGOs can have their personal information hidden while maintaining access to a wider set of data elements for the usage of law enforcement. Thus, internet governance plays a crucial role in engaging more people worldwide. The more people we engage through internet governance, the more we’ll be able to draw from our collective intelligence, which cannot be achieved through fragmentation, censorship, or eroding net neutrality.
